Take a Break – It Will Increase Your Productivity

Today’s workday started out extremely busy. Illumina Filmworks is a  boutique video production house based in Kansas City. We do everything associated with high-end production – writing scripts for clients, producing, shooting and postproduction. Right now we have several projects in various stages of production. After going through both in-house and client emails I turn my attention to Illumina’s calendar. Just today I need to book a couple shoots, hop on two different phone meetings and attend a couple face to face meetings. I am not a fan of being stuck in the office. I am a director of photography and like to be outside surrounded by cameras and people. Sitting at my desk doing office work is just a necessary hazard of owning a business.

I am in the middle of responding to an email and talking on the phone to a vendor when all of a sudden “The Great Gazoo” jumps into my brain. I finish the phone call and email and all I can think about is whether The Great Gazoo was on The Flintstones or The Jetsons. The workday is on pause while I relive my childhood for a second and “google” “The Great Gazoo”. It turns out he started on The Flintstones and later did a guest appearance on The Jetsons. He is often cited by fans and critics of the show as being an example of the show’s having “jumped the shark.”

Anyhoo, why am I writing about this? This little side track adventure was a welcomed and necessary break to my stressful day. I was able to turn off work for a few minutes and relax my brain. There are tons of studies out there that suggest surfing the interweb once in awhile during the workday is actually good for productivity. I am not going to bore you with a bunch of statistics and studies. If you want proof just search “web surfing better employee”. Pursue at your leisure. It’s easy for me to preach to the choir because I am the boss. If I want to take a break and check Facebook I can. If you are the boss, don’t get too upset if your catch your employees taking a break and searching the web. If you are an employee, talk to your boss and have an honest conversation about how to be productive and the necessity of taking a break. Go ahead order that hat on Amazon!

Trust me, the nature of the beast is to talk about interweb browsing at work and have an open discussion – embrace an occasional surf because like it or not, it’s going to happen anyway.

Okay, I really need to get back to work.
